Finally an Airline for Pets! -- Pet Airways

Pets and their human companions are cheering today.  Finally, an airline that caters to pets -- that provides safe, comfortable transportation and in style.  No more traveling in cargo like an inanimate piece of luggage.  Pet Airways, the first airline for pets, puts animals first.  Their pawsengers (as they call them) fly first class --  in the main cabin!

It all began when Alysa Binder and Dan Wiesel, Pet Airways founders, spent a nerve-racking flight thinking about their Jack Russell terrier, Zoe, who was in the plane's cargo hold.  They felt there had to be a better option and so the married couple decided to start their own airline that would make flying less stressful for both pets and their human companions.  Alysa and Dan started Pet Airways in 2005 and spent the last four years designing their fleet of five planes that would accommodate four-legged passengers (only dogs and cats) in comfort and style while meeting FAA regulations.  Their maiden flight was on July 14, and so far they've had an overwhelming response from the public.  They are booked solid for the next two months.

Pet Airways will fly between five major cities -- New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Washington, and Denver. Fares start at $149 one way.  For pet people concerned about their beloved pets, this is quite reasonable taking into consideration the stress and horror stories that have been associated with putting pets in cargo where the dark claustrophobic area can experience extreme temperatures.  And while all commercial airlines offer pet travel, only a limited number of small pets are allowed in the main cabin.  Others must fly as checked baggage or in the cargo area.
